For the past two months, i’ve been watching tutorials & YouTube videos on wide topics of Networking in an Enterprise. This studying is all in preparation for the CompTIA Network+ exam. For those of you who are not familiar with the test, this is a vendor-neutral exam that tests…well your networking knowledge. There are certainly other companies that offer their own networking exam, but i felt this one would benefit myself the most. Here are some of those reasons:
Vendor Neutral
This is upon preference, but I didn’t want this certification to based on a company’s standard. The certification is widely known in the IT industry. I can take this certification pretty much anywhere. Since it’s not a granular topic or vendor, that means many companies could be looking for a candidate with that under their belt.
Variety of Topics
I will admit, this test covers a LOT of topics. It’s kinda overwhelming as you go through the content. The reason for this is because networking is heavily involved in a modern enterprise office. There are many technologies, devices, and standards that need to be memorized. It also aligns with my well-rounded knowledge philosophy. It would be beneficial to be familiar with majority of networking concepts and tools at my disposal so i will have less studying to do in my future. For IT guys that aren’t specializing in networking but want to know concepts, this would be great. At one point or another, this information will come up in your workplace. Trust me. As i was going through the content, i had many “Oh yeah! we use that”, or “OH… so that’s what that is. and that’s what it’s used for.”
Relevancy with other jobs
Now developers will say networking isn’t required to get a job. That is indeed correct. I would add though, this information would certainly help you. Without networking, there would be no communication between devices which would make your code useless for the most part. Developers know there will be a back end infrastructure when the application starts to grow. That goes for the hardware and software. This infrastructure not only needs to be setup properly for communication and efficiency, but as well as securely.
Soon i will be scheduling to take the test. Hoping for the best! With this knowledge, i also hope to utilize it for this site to maybe help you guys in some way so stay tuned!
